چکیده

A N I M A L breeders often select the extreme individuals in a population. This may conflict with natural selection for reproductive fitness. For example, chickens with intermediate body weights and egg weights usually have the highest hatchability. LATTER and ROBERTSON ( 1962) hypothesized that the decline in fitness with selection for a metric trait is a consequence of gene frequency changes of two kinds: one results from directional selection and the other from random fixation of genes due to the restricted size of the selected population, i.e., from inbreeding depression. The first objective of our study was to compare the relative effects of inbreeding depression and egg size on hatchability in small populations undergoing directional selection for egg weight. The second was to investigate the path by which egg size genes influence hatchability-whether as a direct effect on hatchability or as an indirect (materna1)effect.

Improving Production Traits for El-Salam and Mandarah Chicken Strains by Crossing II-Estimation of Crossbreeding Effects on Egg Production and Egg Quality Traits

A crossbreeding experiment was carried out between two Egyptian strains of chickens namely Mandarah (MM) and ElSalam (SS). The two purebred strains and their reciprocal crosses (MS and SM) were used to estimate the effect of crossing on egg laying and egg quality parameters, direct additive and maternal additive effects as well as heterosis and direct heterosis percentages for studied traits. R...

Genetics of hatchability - egg quality from the perspective of a chick

Hatchability is a complex age dependent trait. It comprises of several sub-traits which are susceptible to genetic and environmental factors arising from various sources. This review examines the genetic basis of egg production, fertility and egg quality traits and how these relate with hatchability. We suggest that both sire and dam genetic components are important in overall hatchability most...

Productive, reproductive performance and biochemical parameters of short-term divergently selected Japanese quail lines and their reciprocal crosses

The current study investigated the effect of short-term selection for four week body weight (BW) on performance of divergent lines of Japanese quail and their crosses. The mean of BW at hatching time, one, two, three and four week oldand BW at sexual maturity time, age at sexual maturity, number of eggs (from 50 to 100 days old), mean of egg weight, percentage of fertility and hatchability in e...

اثر وزن و مدت زمان نگهداری بر pH آلبومین و قدرت جوجه درآوری تخم مرغهای قابل جوجه کشی

This study aims to determine the effects of storage period and egg weight on albumen pH and hatchability of hatching eggs. For this purpose, the eggs produced by native breeder hens (28 - 31 weeks of age) were used in a completely randomized design with a 3 × 8 factorial arrangement. The main factors were 3 egg weight ranges (46 - 49, 50 - 52 and 53 - 56) and 8 storage periods (1, 3, 6, 9, 12, ...
